The nights are cool and the days are sunny and bright at this time of year – a perfect time to visit Duluth and experience the spectacular explosion of colors as fall gets into full swing. And with fall comes pumpkins and everything Halloween!
There are still plenty of great places to view the fall colors in the Northland. We are partial to the shores of Lake Superior and there are plenty of great locations in our state parks as you drive along the shore.
One of the best ways to enjoy October in Duluth is with a train ride. The North Shore Scenic Railroad offers their Pumpkin Patch Train only one weekend in October (Oct. 20 – 23 this year). You get to enjoy the beautiful fall scenery and get a pumpkin to take home – the best of both worlds! The kids will enjoy juggling, bouncy houses, coloring, slides and more. Also offered is a 6-hour Fall Colors Train Tour that takes you along the shore of Lake Superior to Two Harbors where you can get a bite to eat and enjoy some shopping and then brings you back to Duluth. And don’t forget the Terror Train on October 29 with ghoulish cocktails and maniacal music.
The ever popular Haunted Ship aboard the William A. Irvin Ore Boat offers tours every weekend in October (Thurs – Sat) to those brave enough to try it. The theme this year is “What the Government Won’t Tell You” and will be as freaky and scary as always. Features include a dungeon maze in the bowels of the boat, ghostly appearances – some real and some actors, and plenty of screaming!
Two weekends only! Boo at the Zoo is October 15 & 22. Dress in costume and trick-or-treat your way through the zoo. Treat stations are set up throughout the zoo by local businesses. Additional fun activities include hourly costume contests, playing in the pumpkins, games, face painting, and creepy critters exhibits.
October is full of live shows in Duluth at the Duluth Playhouse with The Underground and the Children’s Theaters. Costumes are a must for the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Hedwig & The Angry Inch. These two classics are being presented in rotation this year. The Children’s Theater is presenting School of Rock this October which is always a fun performance for the whole family.
We are usually the Edgewater Hotel & Waterpark but on October 28 – 29 we will become Hotel Transylvania – complete with mummy, werewolf, Frankenstein, and Dracula! We will have arts & crafts and snack stations for trick-or-treating for our tiki freaky guests.
We invite you to visit Duluth and enjoy more fall fun!
