Things To Do in October in Duluth MN

September 2, 2014

Summer might be over but the fun is just beginning with things to do in October in Duluth, Minnesota!  Duluthians and the Edgewater Hotel staff embrace the autumn weather, fall colors and all the fun that comes with Halloween.

Boo at the Zoo - Lake Superior Zoo

The North Shore Scenic Railroad runs fall color tours along the northern shore of Lake Superior.  This is a spectacular way to view the city of Duluth and the shore line.  And be sure to check out the Pumpkin train October 17 – 19 where you ride to pick up your pumpkin at a secret location that can only be gotten to by train.  Boo at the Zoo is always a treat for the kids where they can see the zoo and get a head start on their trick-or-treating.  This event is October 11 & 18.  The Duluth Experience is still offering their fantastic history tours through October.  There is their easy bus tour and the more adventurous walking tour.  Evil Dead The Musical will be playing at the Duluth Playhouse Underground beginning October 23 – could be shockingly interesting.  University of Minnesota – Duluth (UMD) Men’s and Women’s hockey is in full swing in October.  These games are always fun and exciting for the whole family.  Engwall’s corn maze is always a hoot as you find your way through the stalks of corn.  But watch out! This corn maze becomes the field of screams October 25 – 26 where you never know what might be lurking around the next corn stalk.

And of course the biggest event in October is the William A. Irvin ore boat becomes quite haunted during the month (check the calendar for open dates).  These haunted ship tours are by no means for the faint of heart so beware! This tour is so scary that no child under the age of 12 is allowed without a parent.  Bring a canned good to receive $1 off the admission price.

The Edgewater loves to have fun with guests at Halloween and are offering a spooktacular discount along with ghastly activities.   A costume contest, spooky crafts, tattoos, dirt cake, pizza buffet and tons more frightening things are on tap for guests.  Book early as this weekend tends to be popular!

Duluth Air Show in Minnesota

August 12, 2014

The Edgewater Hotel & Waterpark and parent company, ZMC Hotels, are proud to be sponsors of this year’s 2014 Duluth Air Show coming to the Duluth International Airport August 23 – 24, 2014.  ZMC’s Chief Operating Officer, Jon Driscoll, was invited to go up in the Pitts Special S-2B biplane with professional pilot, Brent Handy, owner operator of Redline Aerobatics.

The day was sunny with clear skies for this special flight.  Jon was a little nervous and honored to be asked to take this flight.  He didn’t show any fear as he climbed into the front seat of this beautiful plane and got strapped in for one of the best rides of his life.  After take-off, they performed a few aerial maneuvers including barrel rolls and a few G’s.

Jon & Brent Handy

The 148th Fighter Wing Air National Guard was out practicing during Jon’s flight with the take-off of four of their mighty fighter jets.  You can feel and hear the power of these jets as you stand on the runway.  Thank you to all the service men and women – your dedication and sacrifice are appreciated by us all.

Jon Thumbs Up

The Duluth Air Show will highlight the capabilities of these kinds of planes as well as offer demonstrations and insight into what makes these machines so great.  With the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels as the headliner act, along with the multitude of spectacular stunt flyers, this air show will appeal to all ages.
