Winter Things To Do in Duluth

December 6, 2013

The city of Duluth, Minnesota, is as fun and exciting during the winter as it is in the summer.  There are so many things to do when you visit Duluth during the winter months.  While it can be chilly, there is usually a good base of snow and a few flurries in the air to keep you busy.

Obviously, skiing is a huge activity this time of year.  Spirit Mountain ski resort is in the city and offers a multitude of passes and packages for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities.  In addition to skiing, there is also a snow tubing park.  You can also ride the hugely popular alpine coaster and take a trip on the zip line.  After all this fun, enjoy lunch or dinner at the new Riverside Bar & Grill at the base of the mountain.  The views of Duluth are truly awesome from Spirit Mountain and the snow is always ready for you as Mother Nature and the crews on the hill create the perfect conditions every day.

Snowmobiling is an every popular thing to do in the Northland.  Minnesota is filled with state trails available to snowmobilers and there are many trails located in and around the city of Duluth.  It’s a great way to spend a day with family and friends.

Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing are excellent activities in and around the Duluth area.  On or off the trails, you will enjoy a full view of nature at her winter best.

Ice skating happens often in Duluth.  Most communities throughout Duluth have ice skating rinks for figure skating and hockey.  The Heritage Sports Center offers indoor skating and local hockey games.  Amsoil Arena is host to all college home hockey games for the men’s and women’s teams.

Hiking is a year round adventure when you visit Duluth.  All state and local trails are open.  Once there is enough ice, hiking the many rivers and creeks can be very interesting.

Anglers love to visit Duluth and do a little ice fishing on Lake Superior or any one of the surrounding area lakes.  A fishing license is required and it is highly recommended that you dress in layers.  Be sure to check the ice conditions before heading out.

Another year round activity is photography.  The Northland has given birth to some famous photographers including Craig Blacklock and Jim Brandenburg.

Duluth sports its own Curling Club. Curling is a popular winter sport.  What once was the sport of the older generations has caught on with many younger Duluthians and visitors.  Give it a try when you visit Duluth!

After all this winter activity, wouldn’t it be nice to get warm in an 80 degree waterpark?  You can do that too!  With so many deals and specials, you are sure to find a room at the Edgewater that perfectly fits your family.

Bentleyville Tour of Lights in Bayfront Festival Park

November 14, 2013

We have Tiki Tom and holiday helpers, we have cocoa and cookies, we have an 80 degree waterpark on a cold winter’s day, and we have the easiest, most fun way to get to Bentleyville at Bayfront Festival Park – the train on Friday and Saturdays provided by the North Shore Scenic Railroad.  Enjoy no hassles of driving into Canal Park and finding parking.  Take the train from the Edgewater Hotel to the greatest holiday light show.  Bentleyville opens November 23 and runs through December 28.

What began as simply decorating the home for the holidays has now become the largest holiday light display in America.  With a 128-foot tree as its centerpiece, Bentleyville grows each year with expanded displays and offerings for visitors so even if you came last year; it will be different this year.

Admission is free, however; donations are graciously accepted at various points in the park.  Visitors to Duluth’s Bentleyville will enjoy free coffee, cocoa and cookies as well as meeting various holiday characters including Santa and his reindeer. Visitors are also encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy or non-perishable food item for the Salvation Army.

Stay at the toasty Edgewater and let us make your holiday experience one to remember!  Your room includes use of all facilities at the Edgewater as well as access to the train to Bentleyville on Friday & Saturday nights.  The kids will enjoy waiting for the train with Mrs. Claus and Tiki Tom while they sip on cocoa and nibble on cookies.  Reserve now as these date book quickly!

This country music band is a family affair with sister, Kimberly, being supported by younger brothers, Neil and Reid.  In 2011, The Band Perry was honored by the Academy of Country Music with the Top New Duo and Top New Artist awards.

Since this is a Saturday night show, it is also a great time to book a weekend getaway in Duluth.  Enjoy one or two nights in town taking in all the fun winter activities during the day and visit some of the best restaurants and entertainment venues in the evening before or after the show.  And enjoy the warmth of the waterpark at the Edgewater Hotel during your weekend stay!

Visit Duluth this November

November 1, 2013

November is here and with it comes the history of Lake Superior’s infamous gales.  We all know the tragic story of the famed Edmund Fitzgerald which has made the largest of the great lakes one to fear during this month.  In Duluth, we remember and celebrate the Great Lakes maritime history with the Gales of November on November 2 with the Lake Superior Marine Museum Associations day of events.  Bring the family to learn about the Great Lakes, the many shipwrecks of the area and other maritime history.

Disney fans will enjoy the November 14 Disney on Ice event at Amsoil Arena.  This show is always a thrill as skaters retell three Disney fairy tales.  This is one show that all the little princes and princesses will love!

The largest craft show in the area, Festival of Trees, is November 23 & 24 at the Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center.   The Junior League of Duluth makes this a great fundraising event and a wonderful shopping experience for everyone to get a few one-of-a-kind gifts for friends and family.

The greatest holiday light show opens at Bayfront Festival Park November 23 and runs through December 28.  If you have not toured Bentleyville yet, then you need to come this year.

Enjoy your time in Duluth even more by reserving a room at the Edgewater where you can relax and enjoy the toasty warm waterpark when you aren’t out and about enjoying the culture of Duluth.  The Edgewater has extra special packages for Bentleyville that include a room and train ride to Bayrfront.  These packages go quickly so book early!
